Set on a sandy stretch of public beach in central Playa del Carmen, the upscale Thompson Beach House is a stylish property that primarily draws young couples and groups of friends. Its 27 rooms are spacious and chic, with mid-century decor, upscale amenities such as gourmet minibars and sateen-woven linens, and balconies -- all with at least partial ocean views. C Grill, the hotel’s restaurant and beach lounge is a great spot for a bite or sunset drinks, while the pool offers plenty of space to relax, including serviced cabanas with daybeds and ceiling fans. Travelers wanting an affordable all-inclusive resort in the area should consider the Royal Hideaway Playacar, an adults-only luxury property along the beach. While just a short walk from Thompson’s main address on Playa del Carmen’s Quinta Avenida, the Thompson Beach House beckons guests with its laid-back, bohemian spirit.

For breakfast the next morning, I walked the few blocks to the Main House so I could check out the scene there and catch the full breakfast at Cinco, the rooftop restaurant. There were also two bottles of water in the bathroom, which were covered by the $35 lifestyle fee and replaced daily but hardly enough for even one person, considering there was no option of refilling them. I was assigned a room just above the lobby, on the first level with guest rooms. Still, I could see a sliver of ocean, plus the rest of the small hotel, including the pool and cabanas. The bathroom was sizable as well, with a double vanity, shower, water closet and a large soaking tub.

Grab a drink from the gourmet minibar before winding down in the walk-in rainfall shower. Thompson Beach House is set on a small but sandy stretch of Playa del Carmen’s public beach. The hotel offers a number of loungers for guests, as well as a few plush daybeds decorated with colorful pillows on a platform a bit set back from the sand for added privacy. Adjacent to the beach is C Grill, the hotel’s casual restaurant and lounge, which provides food and drinks beach and poolside. Seaweed has become a common issue in the region and can sometimes affect the Beach House’s beach.

Thompson Beach House offers the best of both, with a location right on the beach and a two-minute walk from Quinta Avenida. The hotel is also just a four-minute walk from sister property Thompson Playa del Carmen (or Main House), where adult guests get access to two restaurants, an infinity pool, a 24-hour gym, and fun, swank parties.

The chic mid-century digs are filled with thoughtful comforts and beach views galore. Take a dip in the ocean, lounge poolside, practice yoga on the beach or enjoy a cool variety of tropical adventures.With just 27 rooms and suites, the Beach House is both intimate and personalized. Each space has custom furnishings, a soothing color palette and at least a partial ocean view, as well as a private terrace. The locally-sourced materials include Guadalajara tiles, stone and white-washed wood panels. The junior suites and suites add jetted soaking tubs to the already luxurious bathrooms. C-Grill, the hotels’ beachfront restaurant, serves wood fire grilled seafood, ceviches and inspired twists on traditional Mexican favorites, along with poolside cocktails.

Hotel was very comfortable, the rooms were beautiful, staff was very helpful and friendly, and the location was perfect. They were very accommodating when we hung out on the beachside all day to attend to what we wanted. The front staff recommended a private guide for a day trip to Chichen Itza that was fabulous.

Given that I only had one night to experience the hotel, I decided not to venture out, so I made my way downstairs to C-Grill. I got a warm welcome and was offered a seat anywhere I liked. There was a ton to eat and drink just a few steps from the hotel, but there was a fully stocked (and expensive) minibar as well. Front-and-center snacks ranged from chips ($4) to chocolate ($8), along with a small bottle of Clase Azul tequila ($67) and Belvedere vodka ($50).

Both properties have a similar design and sleek outdoor spaces with ocean views. However, there are key differences worth considering before booking. While the Beach House is right on the beach, the Main House is located on Quinta Avenida, a lively street lined with restaurants, bars, and shops that’s a couple of blocks away from the ocean. In addition, the atmosphere is completely different at each property. The Main House is more party-oriented, with an awesome rooftop area featuring two restaurants, DJ sessions, and a striking infinity pool with city and sea views. The Beach House, however, has some music around the pool, but caters better to those who want to relax in the sun -- perhaps before heading to the Main House for a late-night party.

He coded my keys, and, just before handing them over, offered an upgrade to an ocean-view suite for $60 or a panoramic corner suite for $80. I declined, but he said, actually, he had upgraded me anyway, because of all the trouble — my room exactly matched the photos for the Beach House Terrace King base room I had booked, though.
